FEDIOL Statistics

FEDIOL Statistics on EU production, imports, exports and consumption are available for the year 2008 and for the 1980-2008 period.

Our statistics cover Oilseeds (tariff headings 1201 to 1207), Vegetable oils and fats (tariff headings 1507 to 1515) and Meals (tariff headings 2304 to 2306).

The different tables give the EU total figures.

Sources

Most of the figures have been taken from reports supplied by members of FEDIOL. They have been complemented where necessary by figures taken from:

Products covered

1. Oilseeds (tariff headings 1201 to 1207):

a. Volumes processed for the production of oils and meals, with the exception of olives. This refers exclusively to seeds and fruits processed into oils and meals in Community plants.
b. Production, imports, exports of oilseeds, with the exception of olives. For certain varieties, the figures given here, whether they concern production or trade, do not fully correspond to those mentioned under a. In fact, some of the seeds are also used for other purposes than their processing into oils and meals. Such is the case for flax seeds, sunflower seeds, rape seeds and soya beans which are used either for sowing or in food products or in animal feedstuffs.

2. Vegetable oils and fats (tariff headings 1507 to 1515):

The "consumption" of vegetable oils and fats is the result of the following:

production of crude oils
+ imports of crude and other than crude oils
- exports of crude and other than crude oils
with stocks not taken into account.

3. Meals (tariff headings 2304 to 2306, oil cakes and other residues resulting from the extraction of olive oil excluded):

Account has been taken of meals for animal feedstuffs only; castor meals, which are used for technical purposes - fertilizers in particular -, have not been included. Neither have meat meals, bone meals, blood meals,...

The meal "consumption" has been calculated by using the same criteria as for the vegetable oils and fats "consumption", i.e.:

production of crude oils
+ imports of crude and other than crude oils
- exports of crude and other than crude oils
with stocks not taken into account.

The compound feeds production, as the main outlet for meals, is given for information.

Special Notes

1. Total EU exports and imports:

The figures relating to the exports and the imports of the EU as a whole do not include intra-Community trade.

It must be noted that:

2. Consumption sheets:

With regard to the EU consumption sheets, for oils and fats as well as for meals, they can be established in two different ways:

a. by adding up the balances of each member state.
The fact that intra-Community trade has been left out of the import and export figures should have no impact on the total EU figures since each import from a member state represents an export to another and vice-versa.
b. by only taking into account the Community production and the extra-Community trade, i.e. imports from and exports to third countries.

The figures obtained by applying either method should be identical. However, there are some slight differences which are probably due to:

In these statistics, for oils and fats as well as for meals, we have followed the first method, namely the adding up of national balances.

N.B.

Due to the modification of the data collecting system of the intra-Community exchanges (setting up of the Single Market as from 1993), imports and exports figures may present some inaccuracies. For some countries these figures are provisory and have thus to be used with reserves.
